Euro 2012 funnies and folklore

Since the Euro is the most watched sports event right now, it's no surprise that 9gag's large online community would pick up on it. Here's some funny original content from random users! Click on each picture for the link.

Meanwhile, you may have noticed that after a goal supporters of most teams chant the tune of the White Stripes song "Seven Nation Army." The popularity of this trend in football matches goes back at least 7-8 years and it is a pretty interesting story. Some say that Belgian club Brugge fans started the fad; others credit AS Roma fans; yet others a mixture of the two. Deadspin.com covered it in some depth, giving credence to both sides of the story, so click here or on the picture to read their account. Thanks to my friend Paul for alerting me to this! My knowledge of the origin of the trend was based primarily on hearsay and this is a very interesting source.

Also, animal-rights defenders  in several countries have protested the Euro over humane animal treatment concerns. Like in many European countries, Poland and Ukraine are full of stray dogs, so several cities that host matches have been involved in a killing campaign aimed at improving image and practicability. The backlash has been significant. Check out this video by Reuters reporting on the issue. It seems that even Anonymous got involved! The picture on the right shows Inter fans protesting the practice a few weeks ago during a Serie A match.
